Building Resilience into Urban Landscapes

Healthy cities depend on infrastructure that makes space for trees and manages water effectively. By planning soil, roots, stormwater and built infrastructure together, communities can create greener, more resilient streets and public spaces.

This approach has guided GreenBlue Urban from the beginning. We develop and manufacture practical systems that support healthier urban trees, manage stormwater through green infrastructure, and help project teams deliver streets and public spaces designed for long-term performance.

Our focus is practical, long-term performance: infrastructure that works with natural processes and continues delivering value to the communities it serves.

How It Began

GreenBlue Urban started with a practical challenge – too many urban trees were being planted without the soil, space and infrastructure required for successful growth.

Founder Dean Bowie began his career as an arborist in the UK, working hands-on with trees in demanding built environments. This experience led him to pioneer the development of below-ground systems that provide the soil, rooting space, water and support urban trees need to establish successfully, grow and reach maturity.

GreenBlue Urban remains a family business, with that practical thinking still shaping how we develop solutions today.

Creating Better Conditions for Urban Trees

The value of urban trees grows with them. As trees mature, they deliver greater shade, cooling and stormwater benefits, as well as wider environmental value for neighbourhoods and communities.

Achieving that potential starts below ground. Trees need sufficient soil volume, access to water and oxygen, and uncompacted rooting space, while sharing limited urban space with sidewalks, utilities and other surrounding infrastructure.

Our structural soil systems create protected growing environments beneath paved areas, helping urban trees establish and develop the root systems needed for long-term growth.

Connecting Trees and Stormwater

Urban challenges rarely exist in isolation. Heavy rainfall, drought, extreme heat, limited planting space and aging infrastructure place competing demands on streets, neighbourhoods and other busy public spaces.

Our solutions have evolved beyond tree planting to integrate soil, water and green infrastructure, enabling urban trees to contribute directly to stormwater management.

Low Impact Development can manage rainfall closer to source, keeping water within the landscape where it can support planting while reducing runoff entering conventional drainage networks.

The result is urban infrastructure that combines natural function with practical engineering.

Designed for Project Realities

Good urban infrastructure must work in practice, not only on the drawings. It needs to accommodate utilities, be straightforward to install, and continue performing reliably throughout its service life.

Our systems are developed with design, construction, installation and long-term performance considered together from the outset.

We collaborate with landscape architects, engineers, municipalities, contractors and other project teams, providing technical input that helps move projects from early planning through specification and installation.

Long-term performance informs decisions at every stage.

Looking Forward

Communities across Canada face growing pressure from urban growth, extreme weather, aging infrastructure and changing climate conditions.

Urban trees and green infrastructure can help create cooler, more resilient places while managing stormwater and bringing nature into increasingly dense built urban environments.

Our direction remains grounded in the idea that shaped GreenBlue Urban from the outset: provide the infrastructure nature needs to succeed within the urban environment.

Our
Values

Our values guide how we work with customers, partners and colleagues. They shape how we solve problems, develop products and support the teams responsible for delivering successful urban projects.

Dependable service, practical thinking and a commitment to long-term results remain central to GreenBlue Urban as we continue supporting customers and projects across Canada and around the world.
